What is a Breast Lift?

It’s not uncommon to wonder what is a breast lift. Especially when their are so many breast-related plastic surgery procedures out there. Mastopexy or breast lift surgery refers to a group of elective surgical techniques that lift or change the shape of the breasts. It is an outpatient procedure that I perform at our on-site ambulatory surgical center in Jacksonville, FL.

The breast lift procedure will lift breast tissue, areola and nipple to create and improve symmetry, firmness and a more youthful appearance. Breast implants can be added to produce more volume, areola size can also be reduced during the procedure. The appropriate approach and techniques used will depend on a variety factors and the goals of the patient. Breast shape and size before surgery, degree of sagging and the amount of extra skin that will need to be removed are all carefully considered in planning a breast lift procedure.

After breast lift surgery, a patient’s breasts will be tender for a few weeks and there will be considerable swelling initially. Full recovery will occur in 3-6 months. Breast lift patients can drive and go back to very light work usually within a week, after they have finished all medications. Patients should also avoid any strenuous work, exercise or other activity for at least 6 weeks.
