The best candidates for a facelift procedure are men or women who are experiencing loose of volume in their face and neck which is causing their skin to sag. The best candidates will also have elasticity in the face and neck skin, and who have strong, well-defined bone structure. Most patients who elect to have a facelift are in their forties to sixties when these characteristics begin to appear, but certain patients in their seventies or eighties can also be candidates for the facelift procedure. If you are in good health and are interested in a smooth and more youthful appearance, schedule a consultation to speak personally with Dr. Csikai about your goals. Your Initial Consultation

If you are interested in a facelift in Jacksonville at First Coast Plastic Surgery, the first step is to meet personally with Dr. Csikai for an initial consultation. The facelift procedure is very unique to each patient and Dr. Csikai gives careful attention to customize each patient’s procedure based on their individual goals, the condition of their skin around the face and neck, and their underlying muscles and bone structure.

During your consultation it is important to tell Dr. Csikai about any existing medical conditions and any medications and supplements that you are taking as many popular medications today effect bleeding and clotting. It is especially important for Dr. Csikai conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or the tendency to form excessive scars.

After a careful evaluation, Dr. Csikai will explain the techniques he feels would be best suited to your facelift procedure, about anesthesia, and where your surgery will be performed. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions that you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results.

If you elect to move forward with your facelift in Jacksonville at First Coast Plastic Surgery, you will be given detailed information about how to prepare for the procedure. You will be provided with guidelines on eating and drinking alcohol, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins, supplements and medications.

If you smoke, it is especially important to stop smoking or vaping nicotine products at least a week or two before your surgery and throughout your entire recovery period. Nicotine has been proven to inhibit the healing process and impair tissue regeneration. In preparing for your facelift, you should also arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for a few days after your facelift.

About the Facelift Procedure

The facelift procedure usually takes several hours. If you have elected to include eyelid surgery or another procedure, it will take longer. Dr. Csikai will have given you a better idea on the time needed for your particular surgery during your initial consultation.

Some minor facial procedures can be performed with sedation and local anesthesia. However most facelift procedures call for general anesthesia. If your facelift calls for general anesthesia, you will be kept asleep and closely monitored through the entire procedure by our anesthesiologist while Dr. Csikai focuses on surgery.

In most facelift procedures, Dr. Csikai will begin with the necessary incisions. A long incision will begin, from behind one earlobe, around the bottom of the ear to inside of the cartilage in the front of the ear, then into the temple area and up around the face to behind the other earlobe, all hidden as much as possible inside of the hairline. If the neck is also being addressed, a small incision may be required under the chin.

Facelift surgery consists of a number of steps. After incisions, the skin is separated and lifted away from the underlying muscles and fat. This allows Dr. Csikai to smooth areas of fat to contour the face and possibly the neck. Next, underlying muscles are tightened to also contour the shape of the face. Facial and neck skin is then repositioned, excess skin is removed and all incisions are closed by a skilled plastic surgeon who specializes in minimizing scars. Metal clips may also be used in the scalp to further secure the position of the skin during recovery. When Dr. Csikai has completed your facelift procedure, you will moved to our recovery area where you will be closely monitored until you are released to go home.

Recovery After A Facelift Procedure

There isn’t usually significant discomfort after facelift surgery. If there is, it can be lessened with over the counter or prescription pain medication that Dr. Csikai can prescribe. Severe or persistent pain or a sudden swelling of your face should be reported to Dr. Csikai immediately. Some numbness is quite normal. Feeling usually returns completely within a few weeks.

It will be important to keep your head elevated and as still as possible for a couple of days after surgery. This will help to keep swelling down. If a drainage tube was placed, it will be removed within a couple of days. Most patients are up and about within a couple of days. Bandages are usually removed at some point within about five days depending on your procedure. You should expect to initially appear pale with some bruising and some swelling. As you recover, most swelling and bruising will fade within about 2 weeks. But you will need to be delicate with your face and scalp until it is no longer tender.

Dr. Csikai will give you specific guidelines based on the extent of your surgery. Most patents are cleared to gradually resume normal activities but to avoid activities such as and heavy lifting, housework and other strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Walking and mild stretching are good for recovery but facelift patients are always advised to avoid alcohol, steam baths, and saunas for several months. Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.
