Is Breast Reduction in Jacksonville Right For Me?

Is Breast Reduction Right For Me

Breast reduction can be a great option for healthy women as young as late teens to women in their 80s. However, women should consider waiting until they are at least 20 years old, except in extreme cases where excessive breast size is causing painful medical conditions. Waiting until age 20 assures that a woman’s breasts have gone through the fundamental stages of development.

Good candidates for a breast reduction are those who are mature enough to fully understand all aspects of the breast reduction procedure and the recovery period, and that have realistic expectations about the results they expect. Women who plan to breast feed are not good candidates for breast reduction surgery because some of the breast’s glandular tissue is removed during the procedure. And this is likely to effect the breast’s ability to produce milk.

Breast  Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure and is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Dr. Csikai will use one of the following incision options, (that he explained would be the best option during your initial consultation). Skin and glandular tissue will be removed to adjust your breasts to the desired size. The areola has usually also been stretched and is usually reduced in diameter and moved higher to a more natural position on your now much smaller breasts and the incisions are closed.

Depending on all that can be involved in a breast reduction, the procedure takes 2 to 3 hours. Again, Dr. Csikai’s approach and the techniques he uses will depend on a how much reduction is needed and your goals and will have been discussed and planned with you during your initial consultation.

Dr. Csikai will recommend one of the following incision options for your breast reduction procedure:

  • Circumareolar (Doughnut) Incision: Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging may be candidates for this modified procedure that requires less incisions and barely visible scaring. Incisions are made around the edge of the areola and another outer circular incision is made as required. The skin between the two incisions is removed and the remain beast skin drawn in is reattached at the edge of the areola. The differences in skin to make the scar at the edge of the areola almost invisible after full recovery.
  • Vertical (Lollipop) Incision This incision pattern is best suited to patients with smaller breast sizes, especially when breast implants are added to restore volume. It consists of a circular incision around the areola and a second vertical incision from the bottom of the areola down. The addition of the downward incision allows for additional contouring of the breasts.
  • Wise (Anchor) Incision: As with the other two incision patterns, The anchor incisions are made around the areola, then from the bottom of the areola down to the fold, (where the bottom of the breast meets the torso, and another incision is made horizontally in the fold, centered on the vertical incision. The wise incision allows for most reshaping and contouring.

Recovering After Breast Reduction

After your breast reduction surgery, expect your breasts to be tender, bruised and swollen for 2-3 weeks, and Dr. Csikai will prescribe medication to manage any pain or discomfort. It will be necessary for you to wear a soft support bra that does not have underwires and conveniently clasps in the front for about 2 months or until most swelling and bruising diminishes.

Also, during your recovery, you can move around and even return to light work but you should avoid lifting and all strenuous work or exercise for a minimum of 6 weeks. Full recovery usually takes place in 3-6 months. You may also experience a loss in nipple and areola sensitivity that can last for over a year for some patients. The application of scar repair liquid or gel and the use of scar tape or patches can dramatically reduce visible scaring.
