ABOUT SALICYLIC ACID AND HOW IT WORKS

A salicylic acid peel is considered to be a light or mild peel that only affects the top layer of the skin and causes it to peel. It is often recommended for those who have oily skin, rosacea and or issues with acne. Salicylic acid is a member of the Beta Hydroxy, (BHA) family of acids that are more appropriate for those with oily or acne prone skin. Because salicylic acid is oil-soluble, it is a very effective treatment for the sebaceous, (oil) glands of the face. Sebaceous glands are microscopic and are located in hair follicles. They produce an oily substance called Sebum that helps to keep our skin from drying out. However, the sebaceous glands can become clogged which can lead to acne. Salicylic acid peels can also help with superficial hyperpigmentation, fine lines and to reduce pore size. The other key benefit that we alluded to above is that salicylic acid is derived from the same place as aspirin and has a similar topical anti-inflammatory benefits.

About Salicylic Acid Facial Peels

PREPARING FOR A SALICYLIC ACID PEEL

For 4 to 6 weeks prior to a salicylic acid peel in Jacksonville at First Coast Plastic Surgery, you should avoid any level of sunburn by wearing sunblock of SPF 30 or greater. And Plan to be out of direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks after your peel. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun.

Stop using retinol or acid serums 2 to 3 days before a salicylic acid peel and do not use abrasive scrubs a day or two before your peel. It is also best to not shave the day of your peel as this is likely to cause the normal tingling to become uncomfortable.

If you have a cold sore or fever blister, you will need to reschedule your peel until your skin is clear of any burns or blisters. If you are particularly susceptible to cold sores or fever blisters, let us know when you schedule your chemical peel. Dr. Csikai can prescribe medications that will prevent them.

RECEIVING A SALICYLIC ACID PEEL

Before your appointment, all you need to do is was your face with warm water using a mild soap and rinse it thoroughly.

Salicylic peels take about 30 minutes and begin with the treated areas being cleaned with a solution that will remove any oils from the surface of your skin.

The salicylic peel will then be prepared and applied with a brush and will usually be allowed to rest for about 5 minutes as it gradually weakens and becomes a white powder. During this time you will likely feel a slight tingling or burning sensation. The powdery remains of the peel is removed with water and the treatment is complete.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A SALICYLIC ACID PEEL

After a salicylic acid peel, most clients return to normal daily activities immediately. It is common to experience some redness and skin that is extra sensitive to sunlight for the first day or so.  The peeling process varies but usually begins within 3 to 5 days after your treatment. The treated top layers of skin will go through a dying process that will include tightening, wrinkling and cracking before it starts to flake away. A mild moisturizer can help make skin more comfortable.

As your skin begins to peel,  you must allow the peeling process to happen at its own pace. Do not pick, or attempt to pull off any of the skin that is in the peeling process. New skin is ready when the old layer falls away on its own. And hurrying this natural process can damage young skin that is not ready to be exposed to the elements.

After the peeling has ended and your new skin has emerged, use gentle cleansers and moisturizers. And always remember that your skin is new skin that emerged all at once. It will burn easily so use SPF 30 to 50 sunblock products for the first few weeks weeks after the treatment. And as a practice, apply some form of SPF 15 daily to avoid burns and future damage to your new skin.

The whole rejuvenation process of a single salicylic peel usually takes 7 to 8 days . Once the peeling process is complete, your skin will be smoother, wrinkles and fine lines will be reduced, sun spots and discolorations will be lighter and your new skin will appear more radiant and youthful. To receive the full benefits of the salicylic peel, clients usually follow a treatment regimen of 3 to 6 treatments that are 4 to 6 weeks apart.
