Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity can take their toll on the appearance of women’s breasts. These factors combined with decreases in skin elasticity as we age, can cause breasts to lose their shape and firmness, and begin to sag. A breast lift is a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola. If your breasts are small or have lost volume after pregnancy or significant weight loss, breast implants can combine with a breast lift to increase the size and firmness of your breasts. If you’re considering a breast lift in Jacksonville, the following information offers a wealth of information about the procedure, how it is performed, and the results you can expect.

Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lift surgery is an outpatient procedure and is performed at First Coast Plastic Surgery’s on-site ambulatory surgical center with the patient under general anesthesia.

Aesthetically speaking a breast lift procedure will lift breast tissue, nipple and areola to create and improve symmetry, firmness and a more youthful appearance. Breast implants can be added to produce volume, and if your areolas are larger than you like, they can also be reduced during the procedure. Depending on all that can be involved in a breast lift, the procedure can take anywhere from approximately an hour and a half to three and a half hours. The appropriate approach and techniques used will depend on a variety factors and your goals. Your breast shape and size, degree of sagging, amount of extra skin will all be carefully considered. Dr. Csikai will recommend one of the following incision options:

  • Circumareolar (Doughnut) Incision: Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging may be candidates for this modified procedure that requires less incisions and barely visible scaring. Incisions are made around the edge of the areola and another outer circular incision is made as required. The skin between the two incisions is removed and the remain beast skin drawn in is reattached at the edge of the areola. The differences in skin to make the scar at the edge of the areola almost invisible after full recovery.
  • Vertical (Lollipop) Incision This incision pattern is best suited to patients with smaller breast sizes, especially when breast implants are added to restore volume. It consists of a circular incision around the areola and a second vertical incision from the bottom of the areola down. The addition of the downward incision allows for additional contouring of the breasts.
  • Wise (Anchor) Incision: As with the other two incision patterns, The anchor incisions are made around the areola, then from the bottom of the areola down to the fold, (where the bottom of the breast meets the torso, and another incision is made horizontally in the fold, centered on the vertical incision. The wise incision allows for most reshaping and contouring.
