Preparing for a Jessner Peel in Jacksonville.

Before your Jessner Peel in Jacksonville, you will be guided by our estheticians on how to prepare your skin in order to maximize the benefits of the peel. The following are some of the general guidelines:

Avoid any level of sunburn by wearing sunblock of SPF 30 or greater for 4 to 6 weeks prior to your chemical peel

Use an over the counter or prescription retinoid, (retinol) for 4 to 6 weeks prior to your chemical peel. This will help to remove some of the dead skin cells and will maximize the effectiveness of the peel.

Plan to be out of direct sunlight for the week before and at least 2 weeks after your chemical peel. The is will help assure that you do experience any blistering or darkening of the skin. A quick walk across a parking lot is ok but remember that sunlight through car windows and reflected sunlight can still burn skin. Protect your skin from the sun as much as possible in the weeks before your treatment.

If you have a cold sore or fever blister, you will need to reschedule your peel until your skin is clear of any burns or blisters. If you are particularly susceptible to cold sores or fever blisters, let us know when you schedule your chemical peel. Dr. Csikai can prescribe medications that will prevent them.

Do not shave the day of the peel. Shaving the morning of your chemical peel can increase stinging during the peel.

If you are of a darker skin type or tan easily, we recommend pre-treating your skin for 1 to 2 weeks with Skinuva Brite. You can purchase Skinuva Brite at our office for $80.00. Skinuva Brite contains tranexamic acid, kojic acid, arbutin, hydroquinone and vitamin C and will help prevent hyperpigmentation after your peel.

About the Jessner Peel.

As we mentioned, the Jessner Peel can be blended as a light peel for those who prefer to maintain young new skin with regular peels. However, the Jessner Peel is generally blended as a medium depth peel. As a medium depth peel, it works by removing the top layer of the skin; the epidermis, the next layer of skin; the papillary dermis and the upper portion of the bottom layer of the skin; the Reticular Dermis. In doing so, it removes the skin cells of these layers to reveal young, new clear and smooth skin with less or no fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots or blemishes. Additional benefits include the treatment of acne and a significant correction of acne scaring.

The Jessner Peel Treatment.

The Jessner Peel treatment begins with thoroughly cleaning the areas to be treated with a glycolic cleanser to remove any residual makeup, lotions and impurities. The peel is then mixed to the desired strength and applied. The medium strength peel is generally applied in two coats but again can vary depending on your particular treatment. The peel is left on to do its work and after a predetermined period of time that is again based on your treatment, the peel is completely neutralized and washed off with water. After the peel is removed a calming mask that contains active ingredients is used to cover the treated areas to sooth the skin. The last step of the treatment is the application of a broad spectrum SPF 50 sunblock to protect the skin.

What to Expect After Your Jessner Peel.

After your Jessner Peel in Jacksonville, FL at First Coast Plastic Surgery, your skin will be red and feel tight or slightly swollen for the first 24 hours.  The peeling process can begin the next day but usually begins 3 to 5 days after your treatment. Your skin will go through a dying process. This will include tightening, wrinkling and cracking before it starts to flake away.

As your skin begins to peel after your treatment, do not pick, peel or pull off any of the skin that is in the peeling process. The peeling process must happen at its own pace. Rubbing or peeling skin that has not peeled by itself can result in pigmentation problems and scarring because the new skin underneath is not ready for the environment yet. New skin is ready when it sheds the old layer above it.

After the peeling has ended and your new skin has emerged, use gentle cleansers and moisturizers. Your skin is brand new like a young baby’s skin and will need to be pampered. And in the same way you would protect a young child’s skin from the sun, your new skin must also be protected. Your new skin will burn easily so use SPF 30 to 50 sunblock products for the first few weeks weeks after the treatment. And as a practice, you should apply some form of SPF 15 daily to avoid burns and future damage to your new skin.

The whole rejuvenation process usually takes 7 to 8 days. Once the peeling process is complete, your skin will be smoother, wrinkles and fine lines will be dramatically reduced or eliminated, sun spots and discolorations will be minimized and your new skin will have renewed elasticity and your appearance will be more youthful.
