One of the most common questions I hear from patients considering breast augmentation is about how breast implants are sized. Understandably, many women relate breast size to their bra cup size since it’s the most familiar standard of measurement. If you’re currently wearing a B-cup and envision yourself as a full C-cup, it’s natural to frame your breast augmentation goals around that change. However, while helpful for discussion, bra cup sizes are not a reliable or consistent metric in cosmetic surgery.

Here’s why: breast implants are sized in cubic centimeters (cc’s) a standard unit of volume used in the medical field. Unlike bra sizes, which can vary significantly between manufacturers and styles, cc’s provide a consistent, measurable volume. However, translating cc’s into cup sizes isn’t an exact science. Even if we had a standardized bra industry, your natural anatomy including chest width, skin elasticity, breast tissue, and ribcage shape would still influence how a given implant volume looks on your body.

Based on my 20+ years of experience performing thousands of breast augmentation procedures, I’ve found that a general rule of thumb is that a 175 to 200 cc increase typically equates to about one cup size. For example, if you’re currently a B-cup and desire a C-cup appearance, we may be discussing implants in the 350 to 400 cc range, though this varies based on your body’s proportions and your desired outcome. Some women may need 500 to 600 cc implants to achieve the look they want if they have a broader chest or want a fuller profile.

That said, understanding how breast implants are sized is only one piece of the decision-making process. You’ll also need to consider the type of implant; saline, silicone gel, or cohesive (gummy bear) implants as well as implant shape, (round vs. anatomical), texture, and placement, (above or below the muscle). Your lifestyle, fitness level, and aesthetic preferences all play an important role in determining the ideal implant for you.

During your personal consultation, I’ll carefully examine your physical structure, discuss your goals, and allow you to see and feel different types of implants. This hands-on experience, combined with a professional evaluation of your breast tissue, chest wall dimensions, and skin tone, will give you the clarity and confidence to make an informed decision, whether or not you choose to move forward with surgery.

If you’re considering breast augmentation, understanding how breast implants are sized is an important first step.
