How Rejuvapen® Works

Rejuvapen vs SkinPen Microneedling

Microneedling, (collagen induction therapy) can be generalized as a treatment that involves a medical device that makes micro wounds to trigger your body’s production of collagen and elastin to improve skin condition. But all microneedling treatments are not the same. We use the Rejuvapen System to perform microneedling in Jacksonville at First Cost Plastic Surgery. However many cosmetic treatment providers use the SkinPen. We thought it would be helpful to share some of the surprising differences between these two devices.

Rejuvapen® vs SkinPen®

• The first big difference that sets these two devices apart is that SkinPen treatments can be performed by any mid-level, (level 3 in beauty) esthetician. You must be a licensed medical professional such as a plastic surgeon, dermatologist or registered nurse supervised by a doctor to perform Rejuvapen treatments. This may explain the popularity of SkinPen.
• Among all microneedling systems, the Rejuvapen has the most powerful motor making it the most powerful microneedling system available. The added power of Rejuvapen allows for more uniform treatments and better absorption of active ingredients used during treatments.
• Much of the marketing you see online promotes SkinPen treatments as being more comfortable than microneedling. There are also claims that microneedling needles are longer and thicker. The fact is, both Rejuvapen and SkinPen have adjustable depth settings and both can be adjusted to the same depths, between 0.02 mm and 2.5 mm. As for needle sizes, the SkinPen uses needles that range from 0.1mm to 0.3mm which is a thin needle but also a limiting needle. Skin care professionals refer to SkinPen treatments as “superficial microneedling” because the smaller penetration’s result in micro-wounds that the skin easily recovers from with less collagen and elastin production, and less absorption of active ingredients applied during treatments. Rejuvapen uses 33 gauge needles, (0.21 mm). Extensive research identified this size needle produced the best results by maximizing the skin’s production of collagen and elastin. Additionally, numbing cream is used during microneedling treatments to assure patient comfort.
• SkinPen treatments are performed in a gliding manner where the device is moved across the treated areas. Rejuvapen uses a stamping “up-and-down” motion to safely trigger collagen and elastin production without tearing or pulling at the skin.
