HOW A LACTIC ACID PEEL WORKS
Lactic Acid is a member of the Alpha Hydroxy, (AHA) family of acids and is derived from sour milk. Milk contains lactose and when it spoils, the fermentation process converts the lactose to lactic acid. Lactic acid exfoliates the skin by clearing it of dead skin cells and other toxins thereby unclogging and cleaning pores. Lactic acid also helps reduce melanin, a contributor to dark spots and hyperpigmentation. And by removing the top layer of skin, it stimulates the growth of new skin cells, collagen and elastin which helps to minimize fine lines and mild wrinkles. Each of these benefits combine to produce a smoother, more consistently toned and radiant skin.
The lactic Acid concentration in lactic acid peels ranges between 30% and 70% depending on the conditions the peel intended to treat and the client’s skin type and sensitivity. Lower concentrations are generally prepared as a mild exfoliating treatment for those who are new to cosmetic peels or who have sensitive skin. Mid to higher concentrations are prepared to treat fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, rough skin, acne scaring and to reduce or eliminate future acne breakouts.

PREPARING FOR A LACTIC ACID PEEL
In your initial consultation or when you schedule your peel, we will give you specific instructions about preparing for your lactic acid peel. However, the following guidelines apply to all types of peels:
For 4 to 6 weeks prior to your chemical peel, Avoid any level of sunburn by wearing sunblock of SPF 30 or greater. And Plan to be out of direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks after your peel.
Apply retinol to the areas to be treated for 4 to 6 weeks prior to your chemical peel. This will begin to remove some of the dead skin cells and maximize the effectiveness of the peel.
If you have a cold sore or fever blister, you will need to reschedule your peel until your skin is clear of any burns or blisters. If you are particularly susceptible to cold sores or fever blisters, let us know when you schedule your chemical peel. Dr. Csikai can prescribe medications that will prevent them.
Shaving the morning of your peel can increase stinging during the peel so if you must shave, do so the day before your peel.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR LACTIC ACID PEEL
After a lactic acid Peel in Jacksonville at First Coast Plastic Surgery, most clients experience redness and skin that is extra sensitive to sunlight for the first day or so. The peeling process varies but usually begins within 3 to 5 days after your treatment. The treated top layers of skin will go through a dying process that will include tightening, wrinkling and cracking before it starts to flake away.
As your skin begins to peel, do not pick, or attempt to pull off any of the skin that is in the peeling process. The peeling process must happen at its own pace. Rubbing or peeling skin that has not peeled by itself can result in less than optimal results because the new skin underneath is not ready for the environment yet. New skin is ready when the old layer falls away on its own.
After the peeling has ended and your new skin has emerged, use gentle cleansers and moisturizers. And always remember that your skin is new skin that emerged all at once. It will burn easily so use SPF 30 to 50 sunblock products for the first few weeks weeks after the treatment. And as a practice, apply some form of SPF 15 daily to avoid burns and future damage to your new skin.
The whole rejuvenation process usually takes 7 to 8 days. Once the peeling process is complete, your skin will be smoother, wrinkles and fine lines will be reduced, sun spots and discolorations will be minimized and your new skin will appear more radiant and youthful.
