A alpha hydroxy acid peel, (AHAs) is a facial peels that gently refresh the skin’s appearance. As we age, our skin’s ability to refresh itself by discarding older dying and dead skin cells and replacing them with newer younger skin cells slows. This is caused by a glue-like substance that builds with age and prevents the skin from refreshing itself. The alpha hydroxy acid peel breaks down this glue-like substance so that the skin can gently shed older dead skin cells to reveal and regenerate fresh new skin and a more youthful appearance.
AHA peels use a variety of organic acids to loosen and dissolve the glue-like substance in our skin. These include Citric Acid from various citrus fruits, Lactic Acid from milk, glycolic acid from sugar cane, Malic Acid from apples, and Tartaric Acid from grapes.
The alpha hydroxy acid peel is generally recommended to reduce the signs of aging over a few months. AHA peels can reduce fine lines, dry spots and brown marks. Regular AHA peels can provide continual improvement in the skin’s appearance by penetrating into deeper layers of the skin to regenerate collagen and elastin.
When you schedule your peel, you will be advised of preparations for dry, normal and oily skin conditions. On the day of your treatment, our aesthetician will evaluate the condition of your skin and gain an understanding of your goals to determine the most appropriate alpha hydroxy acid product for you.
Alpha hydroxy acid peel treatments generally take 15 to 20 minutes with little to no recovery time making them perfect for the person on the go. The treatment begins with your face being thoroughly cleansed. The peel solution is then applied to the areas of your face that you wish to be treated, most elect to treat the entire face from forehead to chin, ear to ear. The treatment last only 3 minutes and may sting a little if you have sensitive skin or if you are treated with a stronger peel solution. After 3 minutes the peel solution is washed off with water.
The strength of alpha hydroxy acid peels vary from 20% up to 70%. If you are treated with a stronger peel solution, your skin may be a little pink after treatment and you may also experience a little peeling. most go on with their daily activities immediately after their treatment.
